type='text'>Le démon dans l'île

"Le démon dans l'île," a 1983 suspense film by the director Francis Leroi, otherwise known only for his porno movies (including several "Emmanuelle" sequels.) The film isn't available on DVD and has never been released in English, but a fan-subtitled version is available on tracking communities.

I'm having difficulty writing about it. It's hard to write synopses. Still, I'll try, since I have to give something to recommend the film by. It takes place on a closed and provincial French island. There is a new doctor in town. The previous doctor is still in practice, but everyone is suspicious or even afraid of him. He is apparently connected to a string of accidents in which appliances keep maiming people. The appliances are all new and come from the same department store.

This is the beginning premise, and the heroine, the new doctor, does find some solution to these mysteries in the end. It's impossible for me to say any more, since what I find so special about this movie is how far the plot unravels from its opening premise. There is nothing controlled about the way the plot the develops. The atmosphere and stagesetting of the movie are controlled— sophisticated and full of portent—sort of like "Don't Look Now," from which I think this movie takes some cues—but this makes it even weirder that the plot is so haphazard.

Other fantastic narratives give the feeling of being in control. Strange events may happen, but they cohere into a comprehensible whole, and, whatever there is that remains mysterious, you can be sure that the writer left it that way on purpose, in order to gesture at something that cannot be contained by the work itself. Sometimes this gives just the right effect. I like stories of conspiracy, and narratives that form themselves into tight little balls like this provoke the right feeling. The remote and frightening events of the narrative exert control over both the protagonist and the reader.

But, on the other hand, and just as interesting, you have narratives like the one in this film, that stack up their fantastic elements in crazy heaps. Sometimes this is the best way to express the fantastic. The kind of narrative I described above belongs to the city. Structure rises up on all sides. There is a forced march forwards—a sense of inexorable fate—destin sans issue. By contrast, after watching this film I felt like I had spent the night in a dark, enchanted forest, fleeing from one strange light to another, with too much wildness all around to really be sure what I saw. The protagonist's face at the end of the film communicates this, but I think you have to be seeing what she's seeing if you want to understand.

I don't have much more to say about this film. I think there may be some holes in my aesthetic theory, and I'm not sure that these two categories are really such opposites after all.

More by Boone

More powerful and mysterious artwork from the defunct Boone's art page. Not too surprising since he sometimes comes to work with me." who had picked "Captain Blood" as a nickname in tribute to the film starring Errol Flynn of the same name. Morlock develops a new video game about aliens and space travel. While testing for the first time his new project, he becomes warped inside the spaceship of the very game he had designed. Soon after, Blood is forced to go into hyperspace mode and, due to an incident, gets accidentally cloned 30 times. For 800 years, Blood tracks down every clone, as each one took a portion of his vital fluid. When the game begins, Blood successfully disintegrated 25 clones but he needs to kill the last five clones who turned out to be the most difficult to track down or he will lose his last connections with the human species."

Video from the two DOS sequels:

Music in all videos is by Stephane Picq I made the first few with Eliza and Kid Pix, the last is edited documentation of a sculpture by Person. Person makes kinetic sculptures, and this flailing body is designed to elicit a reaction of empathy. It's a body, and all my videos are heads. This started because of the Eliza program that came preloaded with a talking head, but with the following video I decided to keep doing it. I think that Person will continue making the bodies for as long as I can supply the heads.

In other news, check out this unearthed 80's-vintage mouse-drawn comic strip by Trici Venola.

Snow is melting

It's not winter yet, so that means snow is melting somewhere. Above is a detail from the final page of the comic, which will be printed in two colors. Here are some photos of one of the sample booklets, which I printed to submit with the grant which will allow me to publish the book:

It required a few sleepess nights in order to complete the drawings on time, and then, in my sleepless state, I was unprepared for how difficult it would be simply to print the 6 sample copies (48 pp. each) that the application required. Here is some of what happened in the past two days:

•While preparing art, scanner had a smudge on it, making it necessary to go back and rescan every page
•Local copy shop gave me a quote one week previously for $40, about 15¢ per page. On the day it was necessary to print, it turns out they were lying and want to charge $300, refusing to honor original estimate
•Not knowing any other options, I decide to print in black and white, but copy machine at university can't scale original art correctly onto a sheet of paper
•Try to print from computer at university, but it keeps running out of memory
•Print all six copies (300 pages) at another computer at university, returning home at 12AM discover that the entire run is misprinted and the image cut off of page
•I wanted to include samples of the work in color. Try to print on home printer, it jams and keeps destroying pages, 6 AM next to my partner's sleeping head
•The grant is due the next day, and the landlord has announced an inspection that morning so it is necessary to disguise our room since we are not on the lease
•There is a torrential downpour the day of the grant, and I don't have an umbrella
•I borrow an umbrella, but it is too small to be useful
•Return to university, the day I must complete the grant, in order to make up for the misprinted copies, but the printer has broken
•The other printer has no paper and the university staff are frowning at us so we leave
•Discover that university library has 15¢ color copies. I decide to print in color. But I forgot the cord from my hard drive and have to go back to get it
•I forget the umbrella at home and walk back in the rain, maybe it was not so useless
•Print one copy of the comic, the library refuses to allow us to print more copies, it's unclear whether it is because we are not students (but it is open to the public) or because they don't allow copies in volume (but the charge is per page?)
•Luckily, the post office at the university can print for the same price or better, so the grant is completed in time.
•Completely sleep deprived, I thought I lost my power cord, so after completing the grant I walk back to the library to get it, and finally after returning back to the café with Jackie I find it was in one of our bags
•Also, my house caught fire.

For the last item, here is some proof...some pictures taken by Jackie (my partner, Jackie Wang):

Nobody was harmed, but the sprinkler system went off, and some apartments were flooded. This was on the other side of the building, so it didn't affect my roommates or me. I had to work somewhere else, so I went to my roommate's studio at the university, and completed most of the final work on the comic there. The fire turned out to be productive for me, but I wish it hadn't harmed anyone's stuff

Perhaps more interesting to most readers of the blog, however, will be what happened the morning before all the madness with the printing, following the night of the fire. At 8 AM, a package arrived:

While I was completely frenzied, I recieved this wonderful surprise. Nishino Sorau, the editor of Kakuh, gave me something to look forward to while I completed the grant. Inside the package were the back issues of Kakuh, and several copies of the issue from this month in which my work has appeared.

Of course, it took some time before I could finally get to them. But notice the shipping codes on the package above. This matches the name of Saito Taneo's famous comic:

(An advertisement for Hokutoh Shobu, featuring the book by Saito Taneo in which "EGO" appears)
Can this be a coincidence? Anyways, now that I have recieved the package, I can announce that I will make a few issues of Kakuh available through my online store, which has recently opened at seminal.us.

Or you can buy Kakuh now by clicking here: temporarily SOLD OUT!

It's the day after all the madness, so I've had some time to look at the back issues of Kakuh. I still have a lot to absorb, but I will try to share with you some of the artists that have stood out for me so far.

Hironori Kikuchi, a fantastic artist whose work from Garo was translated in English in Secret Comics Japan, and is also published by Editions Humeurs in France, has appeared in almost every issue of Kakuh this year. I recorded this video of his appearance in this month's issue— a collaboration with Sylvain Gerand, who has previously been published in Stripburger.

(Lewisite was playing, and a train went by in the distance)

Kawakatsu Tokushige is an artist I didn't know before whose work really shocked me in this issue. It's a horrific story about a human snail.

When I showed one of the above pages to Jackie, she said it reminded me of her novel, in progress, in which the mother runs into the woods, following a ghostly, glowing pearl. This drawing by Jackie was inspired by Kawakatsu.

In addition to these and a few other artists my own story appeared. I took some pictures when I first leafed through it—something went wrong with the camera, but I like how it looks!

Then, on to the other issues of Kakuh. I've still barely scratched the surface, but I was instantly impressed by the work of Takagi Hitoshi. His work appears in this month's issue, but my favorite is his appearance in the August issue. This a story about a boy detective, hired by a baker to track down a dog that stole a loaf of bread. When he finds the dog, he sees her sharing the loaf with her family—we have a translation from dog language, and although I can't read it I bet the child must be crying because the food is not enough! The boy drags the dog away from her starving family, which is incredibly heartrending and rendered in a few huge, emotionally charged panel—but he has a change of heart, and tries to return the money to the baker. The baker has a change of heart, too—and in the end, the money goes to give the dogs more bread.

This story is very emotional, but the first thing that caught my eye, before I deciphered the story (which I could understand quite well withous speaking Japanese), is Takagi's textured and extremely varied rendering style. There are no solid blacks to be seen anywhere in this comic. In addition to screentone and detailed crosshatching and stippling, there are also textures that look like they could be from a block-printing process, or from a copy machine that's low on toner, or maybe simply from the contrast being turned up where there were solid blacks so that the brush strokes and the grain of the paper that can be seen—except that there's no noise or grime in the comic, just these very beautiful and varied textures rubbing up against one another. There's clearly a lot of work put into these drawings, but there's nothing forced about them, since the figures are drawn in a free, scratchy pen line in a style that resembles old children's manga. I don't know anything about children's manga, but this rough, cartoon style reminds me of Yoshiharu Tsuge's work for children from the 50's.

Takagi's use of texture reminds me also of Saito Taneo, who in "Dream of Koshihikari" is adept at putting textures in front of you where it's impossible to say what process they came from. Saito Taneo, who is an editor of Kakuh, has work in 4-koba style in most of the issues, which are hard to understand as a non-Japanese reader. But in the second issue of Kakuh, before it was a monthly magazine (after two sporadic issues, in 2006 and 2008, the monthly publication began in April 2010, and is now numbered monthly, which is why, to judge by the numbers on the spines, there is no issue #3), I was really happy to find some strange computer-drawn comics, that date back to the 1990s', by Saito that feature his characters, very beloved to me even though I don't know their names, from "Ego" and other stories.

To give the example, here is some of his work from the book "Dream of Koshihikari" that I've mentioned previously on this blog.

This is some old animation by Saito Taneo that Nishino posted online.

Finally, in addition to all of the issues of Kakuh, Nishino also shared with me his own work: "HAPPINESS IN A WORLD WITH NO DIRECTIONS." This work is told almost entirely in 4-koma style, but instead of gags the format is used to describe the problem posed in the title. With one comic per, there is quite a lot of room on the page— which, to my surprise, allows room for a translation in English! I will certainly post more about this book once I have a had a chance to read all of it— a rare privilege for me with Japanese comics!

That wraps up this post, so I want to thank Nishino Sorau profusely for allowing me to share these comics with you. Also, thanks to Susanne Yuki, the translator of my comic, who made it possible for me to participate in Kakuh! The story, which hasn't been printed in English, dwells on the themes of domestic conflict, paranoia, and a famous psychoanalytic case study by Viktor Tausk. It was only possible for this comic to appear thanks to the help of Susanne Yuki, who translated it, and Shigehiro Okada. The magazine is edited by Saito Taneo and Nishino Sorau, and I'm very grateful to both of them for giving my work a home.

Full table of contents follows:

"Kyarorain Buren"

In other news, I've taken down most of the posts on this blog in preparation for the eventual move to a new domain in October. English-speakers might also be familiar with him for his strange story "Mercy Flesh," which was included in Kevin Quigley's anthology "Comics Underground Japan." I'm not sure that anything else by him is in English. Well, I recently got to borrow a few books of Japanese comics from a friend, and one of them was Hanawa's "Folktales of Nippon", a recent work from Hanawa (part of a series published throughout 2009) which is very much in the vein of the "historical-grotesque" such as "Mercy Flesh," featuring the young girl from that story in a number of adaptations of classical folk tales.

Although I found there were a few stories in this book which I could more or less follow even without understanding the text, including one in which a strange kappa-like creature wearing a diving suit is caught and escapes, the story which I will share below is utterly mystifying to me, but I find it interesting despite that. It seems to be about a hereditary deformity within a family, and a certain type of fruit which resembles it, but whatever the relationship is between these things (which seems to be explained as the story goes on), it is impenetrable to me, as are the motivations of the story's villain, who may or may not be responsible for the fruit/tumor relationship and who undergoes a mysterious transformation at the end. It is all over very quickly, with a very sudden shift back to the idyllic state of the story's introductory splash panel, with the evil safely contained in servitude nearby. Maybe I'm not really doing the story justice when I can't understand it, but I derive a lot of inspiration sometimes from comics I can't read. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I do, and I hope that the artist and publisher will not mind that I have shared it here. Although I apologize for the low quality of the scans, it couldn't be avoided, since I didn't want to cause any damage to the gracefully lended book. Thanks to Mr. Freibert for the lend. The book is still available, along with an intriguing companion volume, so why not track it down for yourself?

The story follows under the cut.

An old e-mail from dearraindrop

The collective dearraindrop are creators not only of fantastic multimedia installations but also of fashionable custom-made clothing. I am very surprised and grateful to Mr. Okada for featuring my work in his blog.

See more by Shigehiro Okada

More Amiga animation: Apeiron

In an earlier post I linked to a youtube video of an inspiring animated music video made on the Amiga home computer. Here is another Amiga animation recently linked to me by a friend, with some interesting images and sounds as parallels. But I remember how hard it was in that atmosphere to produce something, having to make choices of hardware and software, establish a creative technique. The characters that appear in Gadget are like lifeless dolls. This is because in the game world, characters that ask too much and don’t fit in are judged.

"Although they have the appearance of humans, realistic humans weren’t necessary, because what I needed were characters that added tension and persuasive power to this static world. The exposure time for the earliest portrait photos was very long, so the subjects’ poses and facial expressions seem stiff and unmoving: I think the persuasive power of those images is very strong.

"For example, the portraits of photographer August Sander have a powerful influence on me. One of the things that differentiate GADGET from other games is perhaps that while it used the latest technology of the time, the imagery is strongly reminiscent of the fascinating expressions of the past. Incidentally, I now base my concept designs for movies and games on what I experienced during this creative process."

the rest of the interview here

Ian Miller: Green Dog Trumpet (1979)

I have owned for a while but rarely hear anything about this book of illustrations by Ian Miller, a very individual fantasy artist who reminds me the most of Harry Clarke, although it is likely there's a much more direct connection that I'm missing given my general ignorance regarding fantasy illustration. It is a kind of comic book, although it is wordless and does not look at all like one, with single panels of odd size separated each to a page leaving vast amounts of blank space in between (green, for this story, but red for the next and then purple; the table of contents lists colors in the place of page numbers.) I've done my best to reproduce the presentation of the book in a form suitable for online viewing; keep in mind that two thirds of most pages in the book are blank. You can also see the artist's illustrations gracing the covers of numerous horror and science fiction paperbacks, like his (uncredited) work for a Ray Bradbury collection that I've scanned and included below as a bonus; you can see another gallery of his cover art here, and there are more examples of his fantasy and illustration work on the sci fi o rama, ski-ffy and i09 blogs. If this post incites some interest I may scan and post some more stories from this book.

to see the zipatone technique a little larger

"If you look at the first printing of the old EC comics, all 50% halftones are line screens...not dot screens. This is on the original comics...not the reprints. Dot pattern zip-a-tone is either black dots on a white field or white dots on a black field. So there is actually no true 50% halftone with dot screens. It's either 51% or 49%. A true 50% is impossible. This is known as the secret of OXO...because overlayed zip-a-tone , when it is overlayed at a precise 90 degree angle, seems to spell out oxoxoxox . So Zip-a-tone use was kind of a zen thing. It led to all kinds of mystical revelations and stuff.

But now it is obsolete." -- Jay Lynch: forums posting from here

As far as zen practices ago, how about that article on competitive players of Pacman and Mrs. Pacman that appeared in Harper's a while ago.

" . . . not the first person to consider the divine implications of computer programming. I think that this is a really excellent adaptation; Shirô Sano inhabits his character more convincingly to me than do Tsuge's own drawings. It is weird how much Sano's double role (Ishii does not choose to keep the doppelganger's face in shadow throughout, as Tsuge does in the original story) resembles in appearance and significance that at the center of Shinya Tsukamoto's later film "Gemini,", an Edogawa Ranpo adaptation. I cannot imagine that Tsuge was not thinking of Ranpo when he drew the original story, so maybe it all comes full circle. I hope that you will watch this excerpt and post your thoughts in response. Images from the movie featuring Tsuge's artwork appear after the cut.

漫画主義 COVER GALLERY

The comics and art magazine 漫画主義 was first published in 1967 and continued publication irregularly through the 1970's, releasings its 14th and final issue in 1979. This post shows a few images of the magazine's covers. Although it hails from a totally different decade, the magazine published many of the same artists as the current "Gento" magazine: Sugano Osamu, Tadao Tsuge, and of course Yoshiharu Tsuge. Yoshihiro Tatsumi and Shigeru Mizuki also appeared in the magazine, as did Genpei Akasegawa who provided the cover image for issue #6 featured below.

A detailed history of the magazine's publication is available. It is interesting to note that though a current magazine such as "Gento" may seem notable to us (American or European comic audiences, I mean — allowing quite an assumption) for its juxtaposition in each volume of new comics work alongside comics criticism and other articles, the magazine 漫画主義 was able to do the same thing back in the 1960's — which needless to say would be completely incomprehensible in the United States given the place of comics in its cultural environment of the 1960's. If I am not misinterpreting the above bibliography, 漫画主義 published an article or supplementary materials relating to Tsuge's "Neji-Shiki" only a few months after it was published.

幻燈 "GENTO" (LANTERN) COVER GALLERY

"Lantern" magazine was founded in the late 90s and continues to publish now, with greater frequency in recent years. Artists that have appeared in its pages include Shinichi Abe, Osamu Kanno, Saito Taneo, Jun Urata, Tadao Tsuge, Nishino Sorau, many others who I am not familiar with. Most issues of the magazine print features dedicated to Yoshiharu Tsuge, such as travel diaries with photographs of the locations he depicted in his work as well as concept artwork and previously unpublished artworks predating his retirement. Some of the cover illustrations below are by Tsuge.

"Gento" is published by 北冬書房 "Hokutou Shobou" (North Winter); most of these images are from the Hokutou Shobou website.
